Andrew McCarthy

Andrew holds a B.Mus. from Memorial University of Newfoundland where he majored in performance. He has studied with the finest percussionists in Newfoundland such as Rob Power, Bill Brennan, Curtis Andrews, and Sonny Hogan. Also, Andrew has studied the music of the Ewe ethnic group in the village of Dzogadze in Ghana. His teachers there include master drummers Sammy Agudzemegah, Ledzi Agudzemegah, and Oliver Torgboh. In 2013, Andrew was lucky enough to participate in the Halifax based free jazz workshop, Creative Music Week. In this week and a half long workshop, Andrew had the honor to study with legendary free drummer Jerry Granelli, as well as an all-star international faculty of musicians that included: J. Anthony Grenelli, David Tronzo, Danny Oore, Jay Clayton, and Dave Douglas.


With wide musical interests ranging from Classical music to World music, Andrew plays in a variety of groups including: The Scruncheons Percussion Ensemble, Dzolali West African Dance and Drum ensemble, Dunungbe Malinke Drum Ensemble, Skank, The Discounts, Mallory Johnson, The Brad Jefford Trio+, Ouroboros Sax Quartet and Drumset. Furthermore, Andrew has performed in various Theatre productions in Newfoundland, such as Ta Da Events production of the musical "White Christmas" as well as Atlantic Light Theatres productions of the musicals "Spamalot" and "Sister Act." In 2015, Andrew toured a production of Shakespeares's "The Tempest," across the Island with legendary folk icons Pamela Morgan (MD), and Kelly Russell, as well as esteemed actors Charlie Tomlinson, Colin Furlong, and Willow Kean. Andrew's current primary creative outlet, Ouroboros, has been garnering attention across the country with the completion of their first Canadian tour in 2015. Recently in their home province of Newfoundland and Labrador, their self-titled album "Ourboros" won the 2015 Music NL award for "Instrumental Album of the Year" and have been nominated by the East Coast Music Association awards for the "2016 Jazz Recording of the Year." Lastly, in October of 2016, Andrew won the Music NL award for "Side Musician of the Year."
